In an effort to provide affordable and wholesome entertainment for our family we have tried to have season passes or memberships to theme parks, museums, zoos, aquariums etc. We usually have season passes to Sesame Place. For us it is a 45 minute drive - food there is about $5-10 for the day - quick stop at Taco Bell if we need to eat is another $20 if we are careful. The passes pay for themselves in just a few visits.
Zoo passes and aquarium passes have allowed us time to learn together while spending time enjoying God's creation. Adding guide books and giving children animals to look for enhanced our experience. We also buy the upgraded passes when possible so we can bring some friends. Sharing with friends makes visits even more special.
A good friend bought passes to the zoo and we bought passes to the aquarium and then invited each other so we were able to visit both places. It may require some saving or setting aside funds. Having a place you can go when you want and for less money makes it worth it. Look for season passes - memberships - half price specials - homeschool days etc at places you would like to go. If your husband works for a company that often donates money don't forget to check for reduced entrance fees based on place of employment. Group rates are often cheaper too and by combining with just another family or two you may be able to get a minimum of 10 etc making it more affordable for everyone.
It is awesome to get to spend time with your family and to know that you were a wise steward of your resources too.
Ask for memberships for presents if you have generous family members! We never did but I've heard of it :-)
